"A celebrity of the international dressage world, Klaus Balkenhol has an impressive record at the highest levels of competition. With two Olympic golds and an individual bronze, along with innumerable German, European and World Cups wins to his name, he was a legend long before he assumed his role as Chef d'Equipe [coach] of the US Dressage Team [a position he held for 8 years, until after the 2008 summer Olympics]. ...Today, Klaus Balkenhol stands as one of the few international advocates of classical training principles. He faithfully adheres to the elements of the Training Scale, and convinced of its value, he fights for it, and isn't afraid of making himself unpopular if necessary..." During his legendary career he has worked with some of the top, international dressage riders and trainers, many of them World and Olympic medalists: Steffen Peters, Willi Schultheis, Linda Tellington-Jones; Nadine Capellmann; Leslie Morse; George Theodorescu; George Williams; Debbie McDonald; Nicole Uphoff; Isabel Wrth; Guenter Seidel; Alexandra Simons-de Ridder; Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer; Ulla Salzgeber; Robert Dover; Lisa Wilcox; Britta Schoffmann; Michael Klimke; Hubertus Schmidt; Ingrid Klimke; Anabel Balkenhol; Bettina Hoy. Reading this book is not only a full course in how to correctly and humanely achieve the highest levels of dressage, but the love and passion of Klaus Balkenhol permeates every page; the respect he has for each and every horse he has ridden and trained, as well as those who have trained him, and the high regard in which he is held world wide. I treasure my copy of this book, and as I'm schooling, repeat to myself many of the lessons he teaches, and has proven, to improve my own qualities and abilities as the eternal dressage student. ; B & W and color photographs; 0.8 x 9.7 x 6.9 Inches; 159 pages; Book has minor shelf wear. Hard cover is brown with black lettering on front and spine. Orange paper DJ. B/w illustrated end papers. Pages are clean and tight. Illustrated with over 100, beautifully drawn and detailed b/w drawings, by the author. "Why would a backwoods farmer forge an axe with classic decorations on it? Where di the maker of this hand-made tool get his knowledge of Greek symmetry? ...enjoys describing those accomplishments of a proud and individualistic world...." When looking at the section on blacksmith tools, in the year 2011 not that much has changed in what farriers [horse shoers] use, from previous years. We might make our tools out of more modern materials now, but in many cases, the old, even ancient, designs cannot really be improved upon. An axe Is still an axe, chisels still work the same, etc. A wonderful book for any antique collector or fan of history. Index. 219 Snape, Andrew The Anatomy Of An Horse: A Faithful Reproduction of the 1683 Edition
New York Howell Book House 1997 0876056079 / 9780876056073 First Edition Thus First Printing; Hard Cover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Commentary by David W. Ramey, DVM. Cover is brown with imprint of swag with tassels across the front, gold lettering on spine. DJ has laminate backing; in a Brodart cover. This is reprint of the classic 1683 book, by King Charles II's farrier, Snape. At that time there were no 'veterinarians', so frequently the farrier was responsible for horse issues which would now be taken care of by the vet. Magnificent b/w drawings and sketches from the 17th century. The sections are: Of the Lowest Belly or Paunch; Of the Middle Venter, or Chest; Of the Head; Of the Muscles; and Of the Bones. While there have obviously been a great many medical advances in the intervening three centuries, much of what Snape observed and suggested is still valid to this day. An unusual book that any avid collector of horse books should have. Has a treasured spot on my shelf for its connection w/ horses and Charles II. This is an oversized book, 4#. ; B&W Illustrations; 8 3/4 x 11 1/4; 373 pages; Hard cover has slight bumping. DJ has light shelf wear, rubbing, 1/4" spot near middle of spine. In a mylar cover.

For this tirumph he was hailed as a 'breeding genius', a title that seemed excessive to some of his friends. 'Breeding genius, hell' one replied.
