Hard cover is burgundy with gold lettering on front; faded gold lettering on spine. Green, monochrome end papers. Illustrated with 16 b/w photographs. Tissue intact with frontispiece. Written 'by distinguished men of his time'. These include Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes, many military leaders, politicians, and religious leaders. Sherman lived from 1820 - 1891, and was one of the most famous leaders in the American Civil War, called by some historians 'the first modern general.' Beginning with Gen. Grant's election to the presidency, in 1869, and for the next 15 years, Sherman was responsible for the U. S. Army's engagement in the Indian Wars in the western United States. He refused to be drawn into politics, in 1875 publishing his Memoirs, one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the Civil War. ; B&W Illustrations; 5 3/4 x 8; 479 pages; Cover has sunning, fading, shelf wear, bumping, some page creasing, cracked front gutter [cloth showing under end papers], but no loose pages.
