Cover is green boards with gold lettering on spine. 2 fold out maps. Colored frontispiece of the Ruins of Great Palace at Hatra. Tissue between frontispiece and title page. No date listed on title or copyright page, but preface is dated 1872; probable first American edition, published around 1900. Last page of book lists other titles by Rawlinson. Pages are clean and tight; illustrated with b/w drawings, and 2 fold out maps. The Parthian Empire is a fascinating period of Persian history closely connected to Greece and Rome. Ruling from 247 B. C. To A. D. 228 in ancient Persia (Iran) , the Parthians defeated Alexander the Great's successors, the Seleucids, conquered most of the Middle East and southwest Asia, controlled the Silk Road and built Parthia into an Eastern superpower. ---The Parthian empire revived the greatness of the Achaemenid empire and counterbalanced Rome's hegemony in the West.
