"The continuing adventures of Richard Sharpe, a 19th century soldier, as he fights to enlarge the British empire. He helps the Duke of Wellington put down the Indian Mahratta rebellion, an operation culminating in the 1803 Battle of Assaye which is described in vivid detail". [The Iron Duke said that of all his battles Assaye was ‘the bloodiest for the numbers that I ever saw’. It was fought against the Mahrattas, a formidable Hindu confederacy of warriors and marauders who dominated much of Central India. An opportunity to deal with these ‘wily scoundrels’, as the East India Company thought them, arose in October 1802 when a rebellion forced the Peshwa of Poona to flee his capital. He appealed to the Company, agreeing to accept its authority if he was restored to Poona. The Peshwa was theoretically the overlord of various powerful Mahratta princes, including Daulut Rao Scindia of Gwalior, who had a formidable army of infantry and artillery, with European officers – French, German, Portuguese, American and British – and a horde of horsemen. Allied with him was the Rajah of Berar...The battle, which lasted three hours, was won by Wellesley’s coolness and inspiring leadership – ‘I never saw a man so cool and collected, ’ one of his staff officers wrote, ‘as he was the whole time’ – and the bloody-minded courage and obstinacy of his troops, British and Indian. Of his 6,000 men engaged, close to 1,600 were killed or wounded. Scindia and Berar were broken and by the end of the year had surrendered to the Company. Years later the Duke of Wellington was asked what was ‘the best thing’ he had ever done in the way of fighting. He replied grimly ‘Assaye’ and would say no more; Signed by Author

'In 1920, Clements offered his collection to the University of Michigan, along with $175,000 (plus $15,000 for furnishings and equipment) to build a suitable home for it. Noted Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869-1942) designed the Clements Library in the Italian Renaissance style, based on Vignola's casino for the Villa Farnese, ca.1587, in Caprarola, Italy. In Kahn's plan, the casino, a one-story building, was enlarged to two stories, the roof flattened, the windows lengthened, and an elegant triple-arched entrance created. Finally, Kahn further ornamented the limestone exterior with relief sculpture and inlaid marble, the whole resulting in a building of extraordinary beauty and architectural coherence...As his personal fortune grew, Clements cultivated a passion for history and rare books, concentrating on Americana, particularly books written contemporaneously with the events they describe—the primary sources for early American history....concentrating on two periods of American history—the discovery, exploration, and colonization of America by Europeans from the 15th through the 17th centuries, and late 18th century colonial and revolutionary America....opened in 1923 with the gift of Clements' extraordinary Americana collection ~~ 20,000 volumes of rare books, 2,000 volumes of early newspapers, several hundred maps, and the papers of Lord Shelburne, the British Prime Minister who negotiated the peace ending the Revolutionary War'. Illustrated with 100+ b/w facsimiles of the precious items in this wonderful archive. A truly beautiful and singular building in the center of U Michigan Ann Arbor main campus.
