Rupert Bear is a children's comic stripip character created by the English artist Mary Tourtel and first appearing in the Daily Express newspaper on 8 November 1920..Ruper iss a bear who lives with his parents in a house in Nutwood, a fictional idyllic English village. He is drawn wearing a red sweater and right yellow checked trousers, with matching yellow scarf...Unlike most modern comic strips, Rupert Bear has always been produced in the original form of strip with illustrations accompanying text, as opposed to text being incorporated into the art through the use of speech bubbles, etc. Bestall developed the classic Rupert story format, whereby the story is told in picture form (generally two panels each day in the newspaper and four panels to a page in the annuals) , in simple page-headers, in simple two-line-per-image verse and then as running prose at the foot. Rupert Annuals can therefore be "read" on four levels. He also established the shape and form of the Rupert stories themselves...In 1935, the mantle of Rupert artist and storyteller was taken over by Alfred Bestall...Bestall expanded the stories and plots of Rupert; and in addition to precise and detailed drawings for the Daily Express panels he also created beautifully crafted illustrations in the Rupert Annuals. Bestall drew the Rupert stories for the Daily Express until 1965; and continued to illustrate the covers for the annuals until 1973". 12 Eberle, Admiral Sir James, Gcb Jim, First Of The Pack A History of the Britannia Beagles During One Hundred Years of Hare Hunting in South Devon 1878-1978
London J. A. Allen & Co. , Ltd. 1982 0851313264 / 9780851313269 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine Illustrated by Sarah Eberle
Cover is blue with darker blue inset of gold outlined hare on front; dark blue leather/leatherlike spine, with gold lettering on spine. Blue monochrome drawing on endpapers. No dustjacket, as issued. Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book. This is one of a limited edition of 750 copies. Illustrated with 19 b/w photos and several b/w drawings. In 1878 young officers of the Royal Navy, were trained on two wooden-hulled ships on the southwest coast of England. A park was placed at their disposal, and in that same year a pack of hounds was brought to this park, and has continued to hunt for over a hundred years. These hounds were known as the Britannia Beagles [after one of the two training ships]. In actuality, the first of the pack, Jim, was not a beagle, but a terrier. Many, if not all, of the early pack members, were mongrels with the names of Flirt and Rummager, Magpie, etc. Gradually beagles and other hounds were introduced into the pack. And the pack was not restricted to the parkland, but sometimes accompanied their masters on board the training ships. Fascinating story and quite obscure bit of British naval history. Also includes 5 appendices: Britannia Beagles in verse; List of Masters and officials; Hound lists of 1886 and 1887; Kennel book for season 1897/98; Pedigree of Britannia Majesty and Royalty '39. Whether you are fascinated by dogs, hunting or naval history, this is the very rare book that incorporates all three! Hard to find title. ; B&W Illustrations; 8 3/4 x 8; 96 pages; Cover has very slight bumping, some sunning.

13 Eva Brunell Seeley and Martha L.A. Lane Chinook and His Family True Dog Stories
Boston Ginn & Co. 1930 First Edition (?) Hardcover Very Good

Pages 153-174 have corners missing. Other pages have some corner creasing. Pages up to page 93 show signs of damp exposure along top. For Admiral Byrd's 1928 Arctic expedition: 'During the winter months of late 1927 and early 1928, dogs and drivers were assembled at Walden's Wonalancet Farm, and training began. Winter survival gear was also evaluated there, in the harsh conditions of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Together the drivers worked for one year training dogs and testing tents and supplies. By this time Chinook was nearing his 12th birthday." Of the 100 dogs trained for the expedition, half of them were sired by Chinook. "When the expedition reached the shore of Antarctica in late 1928, there remained little time to unload the ships and prepare a safe living area for the men for the next year before winter set in. All the dogs were worked beyond capacity. Walden's dog teams broke records during that time for amount of loads carried as well as the weight of each load. Admiral Byrd wrote 'Walden's team was the backbone of our transport." When needed, Chinook was put into harness for his help. It was shortly afterwards that Chinook was lost....Chinook's death was written up in newspapers around the world, including The New York Times, which carried the story on the front page, just as it had when Chinook won the first international sled dog race in Berlin, New Hampshire, in 1922'. ; Signed by Author
