1 Little Brown Jug: 2 Disc Collector's Edition Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Harness Racing's Premier Pacing Event!
No Place WBNS-10TV 2005 First Edition (?) DVD As New
2 DVD disc set. Like new jewel case for set. DVDs in New condition. Commentary by Dom Tiberi, WBNS-10TV and Phil Pikleny. Scarce video. Welcome to the Little Brown Jug Website! The Little Brown Jug is the most prestigious 3-year-old pacing race in North America. Each year more people journey to Delaware, Ohio to witness the "Jug" than to see any other harness race. In 1997, over 56,000 racing fans were in attendance. This is the largest crowd in history known to watch a harness race. A horse has to win two heats to be declared the winner of the Jug. There are typically two or three elimination heats with the top finishing horses returning for a second heat. If no horse has won two heats, the winners return again for a final race. This makes for a very interesting afternoon of racing. Little Brown Jug day is almost like an Oktoberfest ... People come early to tailgate. Sports Illustrated once said that the biggest cocktail party in the state of Ohio is at the Delaware County Fairgrounds on Jug day.

The Andalusian and Lusitano breeds of Iberia have a huge amount of Arabian in their background, as well as the wild mustangs of the American west, many of them descended from the Arabian crossed horses the conquistadors brought over with them. Very overweight, ships at 8#. Alibris media mail shipping only. Very scarce book. ; Color Illustrations; 7 1/4 x 11 1/4; 923 pages

12 Bowen, Edward L. Man O' War Thoroughbred Legends, No. 1
Lexington, KY Eclipse Press/The Blood-Horse Inc. 2000 1581500408 / 9781581500400 First Edition First Printing; Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good- dust jacket

Stitched in satin bookmark. Pages are clean and tight; book appears as if unused. Illustrated with 42 b/w photos. One of the most famous horses to ever set foot on an American racetrack. He only raced during his 2 year old and 3 year old seasons, retiring with a 20 victories in 21 races; ironically, his only loss was to a horse named Upset. Big Red, as he was nicknamed, was a dominant force not only on the track, but after his retirement he influenced generations, down until today, of racehorses, being one of the most sought after stallions. The famed horse Sea Biscuit [of book and movie bestselling fame], was his grandson, and raced in the 'race of the century', a match race, against War Admiral, a son of Big Red's. His statue, very fittingly, greets you at the entrance of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, in the heart of the bluegrass region, renowned for its horsebreeding farms. In his day he was as big a sports idol as any human, the Babe Ruth or Magic Johnson of the horse racing world. Terrific book. Lexington, KY Eclipse Press 2002 1581500874 / 9781581500875 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Hardcover is dark blue with photo of Exterminator in the middle; gold lettering on front and spine. Grey monochrome horseshoe end papers. Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book. Stitched in black ribbon bookmark. Illustrated with 32 b/w photographs. "Exterminator was one of hrose racing's first superstars...affectionately known as "Old Bones", went from backup performer to headliner in 1918 when he won the Kentucky Derby. ..During his long career [8 years], this iron-willed and durable horse continued to impress racing fans wherever he ran. He won 50 of the 99 races, regularly carrying 130 pounds or more [one time even carrying 140#], and raced for 9 different trainers and 18 jockeys. Exterminator was best at the Derby distance of a mile and a quarter, 10 furlongs, and beyond. In fact, the longer the race, the more invincible he became. He was retired in 1924 after an 8 year career to the farm of his owner, Willis Sharpe Kilmer....spent the rest of his days enjoying the good life with his [succesion of] pony pal, Peanuts....died at the age of 30 in 1945. Elected to the Racing Hall of Fame in 1957, he is still remembered as one of horse racing's greatest Legends". Unlike his contemporary, Man O'War, a stallion, who only raced as a two and three year old in 21 races, and then put out to stud, Exterminator continued racing, due to the fact that he was a gelding, and kept bringing home the money. One of the most famous and successful stakes racers ever. Two other racing legends frequently rode him: Johnny Loftus and Willy Knapp. Horse racing will never see his like again, for stamina, longevity and ability to win under high weights. Pages are clean and tight. Multiple copies available. Illustrated with 24 b/w photographs and drawings from the 1939 edition; additionally there are 23 color photographs added to the 2003 edition. "The photographs have been retained in their authentic form in order to maintain the integrity of the original book because the prints relate technically very closely to the text and should only serve to better illustrate the training of the horse to the rider". Translated by Teresa Hoffmann. "In this book, first published in 1939, the authors....set out clearly and precisely the requirements for the successful training and long and healthy life of the riding horse. The authors explain the physiological facts which are the foundation of the teaching of riding and discuss important factors in the training of the horse and how to recognize and rectify training problems. Olympic champion and former German national trainer [sic, now the trainer for the USA dressage team] Klaus Balkenhol and Dr. Gerd Heuschmann...as well as other prominent figures in the equestrian world, set out why this book is just as important to today's riders and horsemen as when it was written. According to Klaus Balkenhol, average horses can be made into top horses through correct training and an understanding of the links between muscular function and the construction of the skeleton working in combination during the different phases of trining. From the point of view of the veterinary practitioner, correct and well-thought-through riding remains the best way to prevent all injuries to the horse. Dr. Gerd Heuschmann considers this book to be compulsory reading for all competition and amateur riders of every equestrian discipline who feel responsible for their horses, and for trainers, judges and veterinary practicitioners".
